What Does a New Patient Actually Get at Their First Visit?
A new patient visit typically includes a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays if needed, a discussion of any specific concerns, and a clear treatment plan before anything is scheduled further. Nothing proceeds without you understanding what's recommended and why.
Dr. Rahim or Dr. Ainslie reviews your dental history, examines your teeth and gums thoroughly, and discusses any specific concerns you've brought up, whether that's discomfort, cosmetic goals, or simply catching up after a long gap in care. Digital X-rays, when needed, provide a detailed look at areas not visible during a standard exam, helping catch issues early on. By the end of the visit, you'll have a clear sense of your current oral health and any recommended next steps, without pressure to commit to treatment immediately or on the spot.
This thorough first visit is the same standard, consistent experience for every single new patient, regardless of any specific offer that brought them in the door in the first place. According to the ADA's Health Policy Institute, establishing a consistent relationship with a dental provider is associated with better long-term oral health outcomes.
How Easy Is It to Actually Get a New Patient Appointment?
Getting a new patient appointment is typically straightforward, with the practice offering both online request forms and phone scheduling, plus reasonable flexibility for patients who need to be seen relatively soon rather than waiting several weeks for an opening. Urgent situations are prioritized accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
A new patient visit typically includes a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays if needed, a discussion of specific concerns, and a clear treatment plan before anything further is ever scheduled at all.
Yes, the judgment-free approach is a consistent part of how new patients are treated, regardless of how long it's been since a last visit or what concerns actually brought them in.
Bring your insurance information, a list of current medications, and any previous dental records if available, though incomplete records shouldn't stop you from scheduling your very first visit anyway.
Yes, the practice sees patients of all ages, and coordinating back-to-back appointments for multiple family members on the same visit is often possible to arrange well in advance.
No, insurance and financing options don't change the quality or thoroughness of care, though they do affect what portion of treatment costs you're directly responsible for paying yourself.
Scheduling is typically straightforward through online request forms or by phone, with reasonable flexibility for patients who need to be seen relatively soon rather than waiting several weeks at all.
Consistency across visits, not a single promotional offer, is what keeps patients long-term.
Requesting an appointment online through the practice's website is often the quickest way to get the scheduling process started, with the team following up promptly to confirm a specific date and time that actually works for your schedule. Calling directly works just as well, particularly if you have questions before committing to a specific appointment. If you're dealing with discomfort or another pressing concern, mentioning that specifically when you schedule helps the team prioritize getting you in sooner rather than following the usual standard timeline.
Either way, most new patients find scheduling their first visit is a fairly quick, low-friction process rather than a lengthy back-and-forth.
What Technology Sets New Patient Visits Apart Here?
New patient visits benefit from the same modern technology used throughout the practice, including digital X-rays with reduced radiation exposure, an intraoral camera for a closer look at specific concerns, and same-day CEREC crowns when restorative work is needed.
Digital X-rays with significantly reduced radiation compared to traditional film
Intraoral cameras allowing you to see exactly what the dentist sees
Same-day CEREC crowns for many restorative situations
Digital tools that make treatment planning more precise and transparent
Having access to this technology from your very first visit means a more accurate picture of your oral health from day one, rather than waiting until a later appointment.
What Happens After Your First Visit Is Complete?
After your first visit, you'll typically receive a written summary of findings and any recommended treatment, along with a chance to ask questions before scheduling anything further. There's no expectation that you'll book additional appointments on the spot.
If treatment is recommended, the team walks through the specific options, timeline, and cost before you need to decide anything, giving you time to think it over rather than feeling rushed. Regular dental visits catch roughly 80% of oral health issues before they become serious, according to the ADA, which is part of why establishing care as a new patient matters even without an immediate concern. For patients who only came in for a routine cleaning and exam, the next step is usually just scheduling a follow-up cleaning at the recommended interval, typically six months out. Either way, you'll leave with a clear understanding of where things stand and what, if anything, comes next.
Request an appointment online or by phone to get started.
Bring insurance information and any previous dental records if available.
Complete a comprehensive exam and discuss any specific concerns.
Review your treatment plan and cost before scheduling anything further.
Schedule a follow-up cleaning at the recommended six-month interval.
Follow-up questions after your visit are welcome, and the team is generally happy to clarify anything that wasn't fully clear during the appointment itself, whether by phone or at your next visit.
Is the Judgment-Free Approach Real, or Just Marketing?
The judgment-free approach is a genuine, consistent part of how new patients are treated here, regardless of how long it's been since a last dental visit or what specific concerns brought them in. The goal is always moving forward, not dwelling on the past.
Common New Patient Concern
How It's Handled
Long gap since last visit
Assessed honestly, without judgment
Dental anxiety
Discussed openly; sedation options available
Uncertainty about needed treatment
Explained clearly before any commitment
New patients consistently mention feeling heard rather than lectured, which is the actual measure of whether this approach is genuine rather than simply a marketing claim.
Nervous About Your First Visit?
Our judgment-free approach makes it easy to bring up any dental anxiety directly.
Can Your Whole Family Become New Patients Together?
Yes, the practice sees patients of all ages, making it possible for an entire family to establish care at the same office rather than juggling separate providers for kids and adults. Coordinating appointments for multiple family members is often possible on the same day.
Scheduling back-to-back appointments for parents and kids on the same visit reduces the number of separate trips a family needs to make throughout the year, which matters considerably for busy households juggling school and work schedules simultaneously. Each family member still receives an individualized exam and treatment plan suited to their specific age and needs, rather than a generic, one-size-fits-all approach applied broadly. This kind of coordination is often easier to arrange when everyone is already established as a patient at the same practice, rather than juggling multiple separate offices.
Mentioning that you're looking to bring the whole family when you schedule your first appointment helps the team coordinate everyone's visits accordingly right from the very start.
What Should You Bring to Your First Appointment?
Bring your insurance information, a list of current medications, and any previous dental records if you have them, though not having complete records shouldn't stop you from scheduling. The team can work with whatever information you have available at the time.
Insurance details help the team verify your specific coverage before your visit, so you know what to expect before treatment begins. A list of medications helps Dr. Rahim or Dr. Ainslie consider anything relevant to your dental care, since certain medications can affect treatment planning decisions. Previous dental records, X-rays or treatment history from another practice, can be helpful but aren't required to get started, especially if it's been a while since your last visit anywhere else.
Arriving a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork helps your first visit start smoothly and on time, without any unnecessary delays.
What Keeps New Patients Coming Back Long-Term?
Patients tend to stay long-term when the initial experience matches what was promised, consistent communication, honest recommendations, and a comfortable atmosphere, rather than any single feature standing out on its own. Trust builds gradually over several visits.
Consistency across visits matters more than any single impressive first appointment, since patients notice whether the same honest, judgment-free approach continues at every subsequent cleaning or procedure over time. Clear communication about cost and treatment options, without pressure to agree to more than necessary, tends to be one of the more commonly cited reasons patients stick with a specific practice long-term. Feeling like a specific person rather than a number, even as the practice grows, also plays a meaningful role in whether patients continue returning year after year without a second thought.
These same qualities that make a strong first visit tend to be exactly what keeps patients coming back for years afterward, long after any initial promotion has expired. Roughly 42% of adults aged 30 and older have some form of periodontal disease, according to CDC 2024 data, which is part of why establishing a consistent relationship with a dentist matters regardless of what initially brought a patient in the door.
Does Insurance or Financing Affect What New Patients Receive?
Insurance and financing options don't change the quality or thoroughness of care new patients receive, though they do affect what portion of treatment costs you're responsible for directly. The team helps clarify this before any treatment begins, so nothing comes as a surprise later.
The practice accepts a range of insurance plans, and the team can verify your specific coverage ahead of your visit so there are no surprises about what's covered. For patients without applicable insurance, or for treatment beyond what a plan covers, financing options help make care more accessible without requiring the full cost upfront all at once. Every new patient receives the same thorough exam and honest treatment recommendations, regardless of insurance status or how treatment is ultimately paid for.
Bringing up insurance or budget concerns early in the conversation helps the team plan treatment around your specific situation from the start. CDC oral health data notes that cost and access remain significant factors in whether people receive regular dental care.
New patient dental specials Peterborough NH residents search for often change or expire, but what stays consistent at Peterborough Family Dental & Implant Center is a thorough first visit, modern technology, and a genuinely judgment-free approach for every new patient. That consistency matters more than any specific promotional offer that happens to be running.
