Most dental plans reset at the start of the year, and unused annual maximums do not roll over. If you have treatment waiting or checkups left, the next few weeks are when your plan works hardest for you.
Three things about your plan worth understanding before the calendar turns.
Most dental plans cover care up to an annual maximum each year. Whatever you have not used by December 31 simply disappears when the plan resets. It does not roll over, and there is no refund.
If you have had care this year, you may have already paid your deductible. That means treatment done before the reset costs you less out of pocket than the same treatment in January, when the deductible starts over.
Many FSA plans, and some HSA arrangements, run on a use-it-or-lose-it calendar as well. Dental treatment is typically an eligible expense, so year-end is the natural time to put those dollars to work.
Every plan is different. Annual maximums, deductibles, and FSA/HSA rules vary, which is exactly why we check your specific coverage before recommending anything.
Not sure what to prioritize? These are the moves that make the most of a plan before it resets.
If your dentist recommended a crown, filling, or other treatment earlier this year, finishing it now lets this year's benefits help pay for it. Waiting until January means starting over against a new deductible.
About dental crownsPreventive visits are usually the best-covered service on any plan, often at little or no cost to you. If anyone in the family has a cleaning or exam left this year, use it before it vanishes.
About cleanings & examsImplants and dentures happen in stages. Start before December 31 and this year's benefits can contribute to the first phase, while next year's fresh maximum helps with the rest. Two plan years working on one smile.

There is no artificial deadline here, just the one on your insurance card: most plans reset January 1. What we can tell you from experience is that November and December appointments fill fastest, as everyone makes the same smart calculation at once.
Schedules fill fastest at year end, so call early. The sooner we look at your benefits, the more options you have for using them well.
