Dental financing options at our office include insurance, an in-house membership plan, CareCredit, and HSA or FSA funds. The right choice can decide whether you get treatment this month or keep putting it off. At Peterborough Family Dental & Implant Center in Peterborough, NH, almost half of our patients pay without insurance, so we've built real answers for both groups. Whatever dental care you need, you'll get a written quote with real numbers before anything starts.
This guide walks through every way to pay at our office: insurance, our VIP Membership Plan, CareCredit, and HSA or FSA dollars. You'll also see how to combine them for a bigger treatment plan.

Request an Appointment →Peterborough Family Dental offers four main dental financing options: dental insurance, which we file for you; the in-house VIP Membership Plan for patients without insurance; CareCredit healthcare financing for monthly payments; and HSA or FSA funds for eligible treatment. Many patients use two of these together.
| Option | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Dental insurance | Patients with employer or individual coverage | In-network with Delta Dental Premier; we file claims with most other major plans |
| VIP Membership Plan | Patients without dental insurance | One yearly rate covers routine care, plus member savings on treatment |
| CareCredit | Larger treatment plans you'd rather pay monthly | A healthcare credit card with promotional plans, subject to credit approval |
| HSA or FSA | Anyone with a health savings or flexible spending account | Pay for eligible dental treatment with pre-tax dollars |
There's also a free second opinion. If you already have a treatment plan from another office, bring it in. If it's comparable care, we'll match the price, with no pressure to switch.
The right mix depends on what you need and when. A cleaning and exam is one conversation. An implant or a full smile makeover is another. The sections below go through each option in plain terms.
We're in-network with Delta Dental Premier, and we accept and file claims with most other major plans, including Cigna, MetLife, and Aetna. Before treatment, we verify your benefits for free and show you what your plan is expected to pay and what's left for you.
Most dental plans follow a similar pattern. Preventive care like cleanings and exams is usually covered at the highest level. Fillings and other basic work come next. Crowns, bridges, and implants are typically "major" services with lower coverage, and every plan has an annual maximum that caps what it pays in a year.
Three plan details cause most surprises:
Most plans reset on January 1, and unused benefits don't carry over. If you have treatment pending, our use-your-benefits guide explains how to time it. Sometimes splitting a plan across two benefit years lets you use two annual maximums instead of one.
Patients without dental insurance can join our VIP Membership Plan, which covers routine preventive care for one yearly rate and gives you 15% off most treatment and 20% off restorative and cosmetic care. There are no deductibles, no annual maximums, no claim forms, and no waiting periods.
You're not alone in this. According to CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, about 27% of U.S. adults, roughly 72 million people, have no dental insurance. That's nearly three times the number without health insurance.
Here's how the plans break down at the time of writing. Paying for the full year gets you two months free.
| Plan | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Child (16 and under) | $44.99/month or $449/year | 2 cleanings, 2 exams, routine X-rays, 2 fluoride treatments, 1 emergency exam |
| Adult (17 and up) | $49.99/month or $499/year | 2 cleanings, 2 exams, routine X-rays, oral cancer screening, 1 emergency exam |
| Periodontal | $79.99/month or $799/year | 3 to 4 gum maintenance visits, 2 exams, routine X-rays, oral cancer screening, 1 emergency exam |
Benefits start the day you join, and each additional family member saves $5 a month. Memberships also include free clear aligner, TMD, and implant consultations. One rule to know: the plan is for patients without insurance, so it can't be combined with or billed to an insurance plan. See full details on our VIP Membership Plan page.
Coming in for the first time without insurance? New patients can also ask about the current new patient specials, which bundle an exam, X-rays, and a cleaning at a published price.
CareCredit is a healthcare credit card accepted at our office that turns a treatment bill into monthly payments. Many patients qualify for promotional financing plans, and you can apply before or during your visit. Approval and terms come from CareCredit, not from us, so read the plan details carefully.
It works for most treatments, from crowns to implants. It's especially useful when insurance covers only part of a bigger plan, or when you'd rather not pay a large balance all at once.
Here's how it usually goes:
That fourth step matters most. Promotional plans can be a great deal if you pay on schedule. Miss the window, and the cost can climb. Ask us to explain anything that isn't clear before you sign.
Yes, in most cases. Health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) can pay for dental treatment that prevents or treats dental disease, using pre-tax dollars. That lowers your real cost by whatever your tax rate is, which can add up fast on a larger treatment plan.
According to IRS Publication 502, eligible dental expenses include cleanings, sealants, fluoride, X-rays, fillings, braces, extractions, and dentures. Purely cosmetic work is a different story. Teeth whitening, for example, is specifically excluded.
A few practical tips:
You can use HSA or FSA funds alongside insurance or CareCredit. For example, put the insurance balance on your FSA card and finance the rest.
For larger treatment, the smartest approach is usually to stack your dental financing options: let insurance or membership savings reduce the total first, then cover the remainder with HSA or FSA funds, and finance only what's left. That keeps the amount on any credit plan as small as possible.
Here's a simple example. Say an uninsured patient has a $2,000 restorative plan. As a VIP member, their 20% savings brings it to $1,600. If they have $600 in an HSA, they could put that toward it and finance the remaining $1,000 through CareCredit. Real numbers will depend on your plan, but the order of steps is what saves money.
Insured patients can follow the same logic. Use your annual maximum this year, schedule the rest after your benefits reset, and finance any gap in between. Our team will map that out with you in writing.

Cost is the number one reason adults skip or delay dental care. The ADA Health Policy Institute has found that dental care has higher cost barriers than medical care, prescription drugs, or mental health care, and that financial reasons top the list even for people who have insurance.
The trouble is that waiting rarely makes treatment less costly. A small cavity that needs a filling today can turn into a root canal and a crown a year later. The CDC reports that about 1 in 5 adults aged 20 to 64 (21%) has at least one untreated cavity, and the ADA Health Policy Institute estimates about 2 million emergency room visits a year are for dental problems. An ER can manage the discomfort, but it usually can't fix the tooth.
That's why we lead with transparency. You'll know the full cost before anything starts. We'll tell you what's urgent, what can wait, and what isn't worth doing. And if cost is the barrier, we'll work through the options above with you instead of leaving you to figure it out alone.

Check My Insurance →Before you commit, ask for a written estimate, what your insurance or membership will cover, which parts of the plan are urgent, and the full terms of any financing. Clear answers to those four questions make it much easier to choose the payment path that fits your budget.
Here are the questions worth bringing to your consultation:
If you're weighing cosmetic work, our smile makeover cost guide is a useful next read. Cosmetic treatment is often not covered by insurance, so membership savings and financing matter more there.
