Understanding Dental Crowns

What a crown is, and why you might need one

A dental crown is a cap that fits over the top of a damaged or weakened tooth. It covers the entire visible surface, protecting what is left of the tooth underneath and restoring the shape, size, and strength of the original.

When a tooth is cracked, has lost a large portion to decay, or has been hollowed by a root canal, a filling alone cannot hold it together reliably. A crown bonds over the whole tooth, distributing the force of biting and chewing across a strong outer shell instead of relying on what remains of the natural structure.

Modern ceramic and zirconia crowns are matched to the color of your natural teeth, so a well-made crown blends in and is difficult to spot.

A few things worth knowing

10-15years is how long a well-cared-for crown typically lasts
1single visit is all it takes with same-day CEREC, no temporary crown needed
3xmore fracture-resistant than a tooth held together by a large filling alone

Is a Crown Right for You?

Crown or filling? Here is how to tell

The answer depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains. Here is a simple way to think about it before your consultation.

You may need a crown if…

  • Your tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken
  • A root canal has left your tooth hollow and fragile
  • Decay has removed too much tooth for a filling to hold
  • You have a large old filling that is failing or falling apart
  • Your tooth is so worn from grinding that the bite is affected
  • An existing crown is cracked, discolored, or no longer fits

A filling is probably enough if…

  • Less than half the tooth surface is affected by decay
  • The crack is minor and has not reached the root
  • The tooth is otherwise strong with no prior large restorations
  • Your dentist confirms the structure can support a filling

Not sure which applies to you? A quick exam at your free consultation gives you a clear answer and a straightforward recommendation.

Crown Types

Three materials, one goal: a tooth that feels and looks right

The best material depends on which tooth needs the crown, your budget, and what you care about most, whether that is strength, appearance, or cost. We recommend one at your consultation and explain the trade-offs plainly.

Most Popular

Strongest and most natural-looking

Zirconia Crown

Zirconia is the strongest crown material available and looks completely natural. It is milled from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic, so there is no metal underneath and no risk of a dark line at the gum. It works equally well for back teeth that take heavy biting force and front teeth where appearance matters most.

  • Strongest material, resists chipping and cracking
  • Color-matched to your natural teeth
  • No metal, no dark gum line, ever

Highest aesthetic match for front teeth

E.max Ceramic Crown

E.max is pressed glass-ceramic with outstanding translucency, meaning it catches and reflects light the same way a natural tooth does. It is the preferred choice for front teeth where a perfect color match and lifelike appearance are the priority.

  • Ultra-thin pressed ceramic, very natural-looking
  • Excellent translucency for front teeth
  • All-ceramic, completely metal-free

Tried and tested option

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crown

A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown has been used reliably for decades. The metal core makes it very strong and the outer porcelain layer gives it a tooth-like appearance. It is a practical, cost-effective choice and is covered by most insurance plans.

  • Very durable, well-suited for back teeth
  • Covered by most dental insurance plans
  • May show a thin metal edge at the gum over time

Why a Crown Works

Six reasons patients are glad they chose a crown

Protects a cracked or weakened tooth

A crown holds the tooth together, preventing the crack from spreading and stopping further damage. It is often the only way to save a tooth that cannot be filled.

Restores full biting and chewing strength

A well-fitted crown distributes biting force across the whole tooth, so you can chew without worrying about cracking or pain on that side.

Color-matched to your natural teeth

Modern ceramic and zirconia crowns are shaded to blend with your existing teeth. Most people cannot tell which tooth has a crown just by looking.

No dark metal edge at the gum line

All-ceramic and zirconia crowns are free of metal, so there is no dark line at the gum, even as the gum naturally recedes slightly over time.

Lasts 10 to 15 years with normal care

A crown is a long-term restoration. Brush and floss as normal, attend your checkups, and most crowns last well over a decade.

Custom-made to fit your bite precisely

Every crown is designed to match the exact contour of your bite. A proper fit prevents soreness, sensitivity, and uneven wear on surrounding teeth.

Crown vs. Alternatives

How a crown compares to a filling or extraction

A filling is simpler and cheaper up front, and the right choice for minor damage. When the tooth is too far gone for a filling, extracting it is the easier short-term path, but replacing a missing tooth costs more in the long run than capping the original. A crown is usually the best balance of preservation, strength, and cost over time.

Same-Day CEREC

Your permanent crown, ready the same day. One visit. No temporary

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In plain terms: we scan your tooth digitally, design the crown on a screen in front of you, mill it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic right in the office, and fit it the same appointment.

The result is a strong, precisely fitted, natural-looking crown without the two-week wait, the goopy impression, or the temporary that can fall off at dinner.

  • One appointment from scan to permanent crown
  • No temporary crown, no waiting two weeks
  • No second injection, no second numbing
  • You leave with your permanent, custom-fitted crown the same day

In-office crown milling

Your crown is designed and milled on-site while you wait, from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic.

Digital Impressions

A scan, not a mold. Comfortable and done in minutes.

We use a digital intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D model of your teeth. It replaces the traditional goopy impression material entirely and gives us a more accurate baseline for designing your crown.

About two minutes in the chair

The wand glides over your teeth and captures thousands of data points. No gagging, no mess.

You see the model on screen

We rotate the 3D image so you can see exactly what your tooth looks like and understand what the crown will cover.

Feeds directly into CEREC or the lab

The digital file goes straight to the milling unit for same-day crowns, or to our lab for ceramic crowns with a more complex aesthetic.

We keep your record on file

Your digital scan is stored, so future restorations on the same tooth or adjacent teeth benefit from the existing baseline.

What to Expect

From first visit to finished crown, step by step

Most crowns take one visit with same-day CEREC, or two visits for lab-crafted ceramics. Here is exactly what happens at each stage.

Frequently Asked

Your questions, answered

Plain answers from our Peterborough team: no jargon, no pressure.

  • New patients welcome
  • Most insurance accepted
  • CareCredit financing available

With normal brushing, flossing, and regular checkups, most crowns last ten to fifteen years or longer. Zirconia and all-ceramic crowns are especially durable. Grinding your teeth at night can shorten a crown's lifespan, but a custom nightguard manages that well.
