What Is a Filling?
A filling removes decayed tooth material and replaces it with a hard restorative material. Left untreated, decay spreads inward toward the nerve, turning a simple filling into a root canal or extraction. Catching it early means less drilling, a smaller restoration, and a stronger tooth.
Decay starts at the outer enamel layer and progresses inward if untreated. When we detect it early on X-rays or during an exam, removing the decay takes only a few minutes and leaves most of the natural tooth intact.
We use tooth-colored composite resin exclusively. Composite bonds directly to the tooth structure, meaning we remove less healthy enamel than metal fillings require. The shade is matched to your natural tooth so the restoration is invisible in normal lighting.
After placement, composite is hardened immediately with a curing light. You leave with a fully functional tooth. There is no waiting period before eating, though we advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first twenty-four hours.
